I am doing a media A level study on how the media, particularly advertising, affects the ways in which women percieve themselves and how secure they really feel about thier body image. Let me know your views!Do beauty advertisments effect the ways in which women percieve themselves?
yes i think so. ads where there is a size six tanned model telling us that this products has helped her slim/ have soft skin/ be tanned we subconsiously think, she must be happy ...and we too will be happy if we can look that way...and maybe this product will make us look littlle bit closer to how she looks!
No wonder we are disappointed by so many beauty products...as we deep down expect a much more radical transformation...to almost model like status..... a moisturizer can only do so much!!! sadly!!
thank the lord for Dove.....selling only the product and not a beauty 'norm' or ideal' to stress us out.
good luck with the project!! xxDo beauty advertisments effect the ways in which women percieve themselves?
In my case, as a 42 year old, I used to find myself looking at those unlined, perfect skinned models and feel as if I'd really let myself go. However, I recently went to a friend's work do and actually saw quite a few of these model types in the flesh. They really look quite unnatural and plasticky and many were painfully thin. I think I prefer my wrinkles, wobbly bits and genuine smile and expressions.
before reading your details, I was up to give you a sarcastic answer...
Jay, of course the media influence the picture of women. Ads show us women with perfect complexion, perfect hair, perfect
nails, perfect make up, perfect figures.
in the best case, this wakens ambition to look as good as them.
in the worse cases, it destroys your self-confidence, because you know (or believe) you cannot compete with such perfect women.
in the worst cases, it makes women with little confidence lose that little and become bulimic or the like.
but it's not only ads, it is the fashion industry, it is every big mainstream movie, every little music clip. every poster, every picture in any catalogue.
Damn right you do, us ladies are constantly bombarded with skin care anti-ageing adverts and these women have about 10 layers of foundation to hide all those impurities and their natural creases. You get women with botox who cant smile properly. You have women with over the top shiny hair, you get slim women size 10, you get pressures to look under 25 again. You want the results to look how the misleading advertisements show them basically. This can lead to further disappointment and an addiction to the product to get the look right. We abuse our femininity to sell products via sexual images too.
Yes, they do. In a lot of adverts, they always feature a really slim/skinny woman in her early thirties with flawless skin and no wrinkles. The models they put on beauty ads are all skinny supermodels with tanned up skin. Do you ever see a larger lady on tv, who might be a size 12 or 14? In reality, these models are half straved waifs who are close to death's door.
Women feel so insecure because they think that the only way to be seen as beautiful in this world is to be size zero. The media is to blame for a huge rise in eating disorders and crash dieting, and also anorexia.
Lol, I tend to ignore them, the people always look so fake.
well, yes i do thng so that a pruducts does inspire a woman throw a advert. But, dont only thng that girls do so but even boys. Coz, am sure if they see a new pruduct or service they lik 2 buy or even try it if it mactches with their look or style. Different advertisement are their for differet kind of ages... I thng it depends on every perso if they are being inspired by a pruducts which is being advertised....
The media constantly shapes the way that women think that they should look and they therefore perceive themselves as being wrong.
Also, most worryingly, plastic surgery is put across as an easy fix to things that aren't wrong in the first place.
I (for instance) am a perfectly healthy average 26 year old woman but i feel that my breasts are inadequate even though they are fully developed. I would not be thinking this if breast enhancement had not been washed into my brain by the media.
I think it adds a pressure to modern women - i try to explain this to my bloke.
Us women live in a completely different world to you men!
Totally. Can make you feel that the perfected images are normal. So makes people strive for perfection. If this is not achieved will make the person feel low and unsatisfied.
Its all in their mind, its not real at all. If a women is watching an advert and they advertise some thing and see the affects that other people have to the real you thy automatically know it'll help them. The way my mum sees it is everyone is different and if some one used a mascara on their eye lashes and it looks amazing that could be because that person has a completlely different routine or length lashes as the person bu because the person makes the product look like it works perfect then it makes everyone rush ouyt to buy it. Its all physicoligical and all in your mind. If you are convinced that some thing wil work your mind believe it does as you've gotm it set in your mind theres a change. The amount of money women waste on products is huge because they are convinced tht product is for them and will change their lives. Everyone looks different and thats why they choose a certain person to model that product who will have the biggest impact on them! If you are insecure about yourself you will try anything to change yourself because what people advertse it you think that product will change you because of the fantastic way people sell these products and put words the way you want and hear them. The public all want the same things and the only way is to put all those ideas together and put on an amazing advert to grow all these peoples minds. Its bad really because you waste so much money on gimicks and wonder why u bought it just because of the glamerous advertisement.
I'm sure they do. I work as a make up artist, so I know the tricks that are used. Consequently I seldom wear make up, use products I often make myself and would never spend more than a fiver on a face cream.
I'm also aware of the surgery, diets and neurosis some of the actors and models have to suffer.
It's rare to find a women or man who is content with their appearance.
What you see in these adverts is a work of art, made by a team of people and the skills of a computor.
The faces and bodies I now see as beautiful are quite a leap apart from the cosmetic house image.
